It's become plain to me after all this time that America has too often been saddled with teams of duds in the executive branch. A President too often gets elected surrounded by yes-men and "handlers," and the Vice President has nothing to do except suck up, travel around and get photo ops (don't tell me he really does actual diplomacy or something, it's not even in his Constitutional job description.)
The Twelfth Amendment modified the procedure for electing Presidents in 1804 as follows:
"The electors shall meet in their respective states and vote by ballot for President and Vice-President, one of whom, at least, shall not be an inhabitant of the same state with themselves; they shall name in their ballots the person voted for as President, and in distinct ballots the person voted for as Vice-President, and they shall make distinct lists of all persons voted for as President, and of all persons voted for as Vice-President...."
See http://www.law.cornell.edu/constitution/constitution.amendmentxii.html for the rest of it, but what that means is the President and Vice President since 1804 have been elected separately, each candidate campaigning for either one or the other office but not both. As a result the political parties developed what's called the dual ticket system, in which the slate put forth for the executive branch is two persons -- one for President, the other for Vice President, and the primary system these days (the caucus system before that) picks the Presidential candidate, and then they negotiate over who gets the Vice Presidential slot, with what I consider questionable results, especially recently.
After the Twelfth Amendment passed, I'm sure historians note that the quality of leadership in the country, with certain glorious exceptions, underwent a gradual decline since the first decade of the 19th century and has never really recovered. Admittedly it is hard to find national leaders of the stature of Washington and Jefferson in any era or nation, but we managed an era of excellence in leadership in the nascent decades of the United States. Not so much afterwards. So what was it we were doing right, before 1804? And why did it work so well then compared to later?
The Constitutional framers originally set up the system for electing the President and Vice President as follows:
"The electors shall meet in their respective states, and vote by ballot for two persons, of whom one at least shall not be an inhabitant of the same state with themselves... The person having the greatest number of votes shall be the President, if such number be a majority of the whole number of electors appointed... after the choice of the President, the person having the greatest number of votes of the electors shall be the Vice President...."
That means the electors chose two persons for the ballot for both offices together, the winner became the President, and the runner up became the Vice President. That meant that in George Washington's case, John Adams, the runner up in votes, became Vice President, and when John Adams was elected President, the runner up was Thomas Jefferson. In each case the two most capable men (as deemed by the Electoral College as a whole) were always selected for those two offices. If the runner up just happened to be in the loyal opposition, too bad, which is why the Democratic-Republicans changed it in 1804 with the Twelfth Amendment. But, can anyone argue that the presence of the opposition in the person of Thomas Jefferson kept John Adams on his toes when Adams signed bills like the Alien and Sedition Act into law? Contrast that situation with the next Vice President who happened to share the same party with his President, Jefferson, who entered the office already seasoned with experience in the executive branch. Burr was certainly popular once, but with the one-party system in full power, he was no Alexander Hamilton. The facts are that the Constitution was changed to a two-ticket system under a political party that had a supermajority in Congress and wanted nothing in its way, including potential trouble from Federalists if they ever got popular enough to win second place again, which they did within months of the Amendment becoming law.
What I believe this change destroyed was a potential and crucial role for the Vice President as an ombudsman and a critic of the Administration. Imagine the value of a Vice President Hubert Humphrey weighing in on some of Nixon's more controversial policies in Vietnam or regarding domestic surveillance or the principle of executive privilege. Would Kennedy have been assassinated if Nixon, Kennedy's best Republican friend, were waiting in the wings instead of his bitter internecine rival Johnson? Or how about Wendell Wilkie or Hoover in the 1930s, possibly keeping Roosevelt from veering far to the left and endangering the economic recovery in the Depression, or Jimmy Carter pulled centerward by Ford, or Reagan pulled centerward from the other direction by Carter? Can it be denied that George H.W. Bush would have better been served by a Vice President Dukakis than by Vice President Quayle? Or George W. Bush by Al Gore rather than Dick Cheney? Or Clinton by either Bush or Dole, rather than Al Gore?
I therefore think that, despite what one may believe about the policies and actions of any given President or election rival, that an oppositional Vice President not only guarantees the party out of power a voice in the Executive Branch, which is certainly deserved in a Republic where the minority retains rights against majority power, but it also keeps the government pulled centerward in an era when demagoguery and partisan politics often tempt leadership to steer the ship of state off a cliff just to prove its leftism, rightism, or whateverism to what it sees as its own constituency. A President needs to be reminded as often as possible that he or she is the President of the entire United States, and nothing could work better to remind a President of this than knowing that his or her chiefest opponent is sleeping in a large house one heartbeat down the block waiting for an opportune time.

The AmeriCare bill
I am against HR 193, the legislation co-sponsored by Reps. Stark,
Schakowsky, Ellison, and Blumenauer (all D), the so-called "AmeriCare"
plan. It is my belief that this is the wrong way to go on health care
reform for the United States.
Under this plan both employers and patients would be penalized financially
if they rejected coverage, a patently unfair and high-handed way of
forcing coverage and the costs attached thereto upon businesses and
patients, especially working people, who may consider health insurance
unaffordable. In addition there are privacy concerns as more and more
records about our health issues are kept in the computers of faceless
bureaucrats, who have an unfortunate tendency to fail to maintain adequate
security.
What about using incentives and changes in the law to cut costs instead?
That would make coverage more affordable and encourage more people and
more employers to buy coverage, while still retaining freedom of choice as
consumers in the marketplace. I can think of a few -- limit malpractice
and pharmaceutical product lawsuit damages to $250,000 per count, cut
patent coverage for new drugs back to seven years, and speed FDA approval
of new drugs. For a bottom income tier of society unable to otherwise
afford coverage, money could still be funnelled to states to provide for
their health departments as they see fit (as is already done, in fact),
without adding more bureaucracy to the Federal Government.
I'm sure lawmakers have the capacity to research and propose many other
cost-cutting ways to make it easier for patients and employers to get
coverage. High taxation and penalties only make it harder and more
expensive. I say NO to HR 193 "AmeriCare."

English Gematria
Strange subject, this one... but fascinating for me. It helps pass the time on a very boring job that I have. Jack Flaws has webpages dedicated to it, which you can view here. http://www.asis.com/users/stag/englishg.html
The English language uses an alphabet of 26 letters which are numbered 1 through 26 in order from A to Z. When you apply these values to the letters and add them up in the words, interesting things happen. That's pretty much all there is to it... but what makes it interesting is the mathematical relationships between the values generated by those words.
Allow me to illustrate this using the number 74:

What I said to the jackbooted thugs of Texas CPS.
This is a consolidation of my four messages (to get around their 2000 character limit) to Texas Children's Protective Services. Not a word was left out of the content of my messages.
To: Office of Consumer Affairs
Subject: Jackbooted thuggery and fascist oppression
Message:
1. If you people of CPS had any decency whatsoever, you would return those children to their mothers immediately with an apology and a slate of numerous resignations for your role in the evil you have perpetrated against my fellow citizens in your state. You should be ashamed of yourselves over what you have done to those 416 children and their parents, the members of the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. As a Christian, one not of that denomination, I am appalled.
2. The last time I checked there was still a United States Constitution that is the supreme law of the land even in Texas. You violated the First Amendment right to freedom of worship by going after this religious group AS A GROUP. You violated the Fourth Amendment right to be free from unreasonable search and seizure -- how it is reasonable to seize kids from mothers over what is accused between one child and one man is beyond me utterly, and the so-called probable cause is ONE anonymous call to 911??? You besmirch and insult the memory of those who died on Sept. 11, 2001 by that trivialization and abuse of that number. And so you ARE an insult to rescue and protection services everywhere.
3. You violated the Fifth Amendment by depriving those children of their parents without due process of law which by the way IS determined by Amendment Six, which you also violated by taking persons WITHOUT a trial, AND by taking the word of one witness who they have not been given the opportunity to confront at a trial. You violated the Eighth Amendment by depriving those mothers of their children for nothing more than membership in a group you don't like, which is cruel and unusual punishment of both those children and their parents. Proud of yourselves?
4. This act by CPS tells me that you have gone way beyond redemption. I doubt you will change your minds because of how seared your consciences must be to have carried out this felonious, treasonous crime against Americans and against Texans. Nevertheless I certainly think it is right that you should be told to your face what you did is WRONG in every sense of that word. When you face your Judge in the afterlife, you will be made to account for every one of these mothers and children. I believe that to be a fact. I am praying not for your redemption, but for your demise in this world at the hands of the American Civil Liberties Union or whoever else wants to sue you for every farthing you own, and by the way -- FIRST AMENDMENT CIVIL RIGHTS LIABILITY is UNLIMITED UNDER FEDERAL LAW!!!

Raid on polygamist group in Texas
Two stories about the heart-rending and outrageous attack on the Fundamentalist Church of Latter Day Saints at the Yearning For Zion Ranch in Texas, by agents of the Texas Children's Protective Services and (what I heard from the Michael Savage radio program were) Texas Rangers (state police.) Over 400 children were forcibly removed from their mothers and put into state custody pending their adoption out to other families -- on the basis of a so far unsubstantiated allegation that one male leader of this church sexually abused one young teenage girl.

There has clearly not been an attack on the First Amendment and half of the Bill of Rights to match this since Waco, and in terms of everything done to this group of women and children -- women who by the way were never charged with a crime; all of this is pursuant to what ONE anonymous tipster alleged happened with ONE man and ONE teenage girl -- a mass atrocity of this scope, short of bloodshed, has not been perpetrated on any group, religious or otherwise, since the 19th century when it was used as a means of genocide against the American Indians. Not even Mafia families have ever been this grossly and unconstitutionally violated.
Texas state agents kidnaped this group's children, based on a LIE about what someone ELSE did to someone ELSE's child, and scattered them to the four winds. I can promise that if in the future I find any of these Texas CPS agents miraculously surviving the Tribulations in whatever land God deigns to give me in the Millenium, they will have to beg long and hard to give me a reason not to line them up against a wall and have them shot, while I scatter THEIR families to the four winds and make their houses dunghills.
I pray to God that this injustice, this perversion, this obscene rape of the Constitution of the United States, is undone and reversed, and the perpetrators are brought to justice. Michael Savage has it right when he says these Nazis should be arrested and thrown in prison. I would have them executed were it in my power.

Endorsement for President of the U.S.
I have finally decided to endorse a candidate for the office of President of the United States.
We have been hearing for some time now that everybody wants change. Well, so do I, but I am getting a little concerned over the extent of changes that some candidates want to exact on the American people. For an instance -- the health care plans of the Democratic candidates, which would mandate that some people buy insurance. I don't know what happened to the single-payer plan, which would take it out of taxes that might be proportionate to income, but apparently that idea has sailed out the window. Now the proposals are to just make people pay for it and then they'll be covered. If they COULD have paid for it they WOULD have been covered! So, the Clinton plan has fallen out of my favor. As for Obama, he is not real clear on just how he plans to lower costs -- everybody who goes for cost cutting cites waste, fraud, and abuse and nothing real ever gets done about that. So Obama's plan is out too.
I also do not like the idea of pulling out of Iraq prematurely. Yes, I hate the war there and it should never have been started. Yes, I think the target should have been Usama Bin Laden's Al Qaeda all along and that we had a shot at killing most of them in Afghanistan and blew it. But the situation is what it is now, a big mess, and guess who's still nominated to clean it up? The United States. I do not think our enemies in the Middle East are the type who can be trusted to negotiate honorably, not with the memories of the thousands of innocents killed in the Twin Towers seared in my mind, along with those of the burnt bodies of American security contractors hanging from a bridge in Fallujah. We're not getting loose from it that way, people, sorry. We will have to keep killing the bad guys until there are no more bad guys. That's how you win wars. Even the ones you blunder into by mistake.
I do not think there is an ideal candidate for this office. There are some major political and personal flaws in all three of the principals still effectively campaigning. I have discussed Clinton and Obama somewhat, but my main peeves about Obama are lack of experience and lack of definition. He's a natural demagogue with a dubious voting record considering what he seems to be trying to represent himself to be, an old line social liberal. Hillary Clinton comes off as more experienced, but she has basically just been a President's wife and policy advisor, a US Senator, and a lawyer pushing social issues. And, I fear neither Democratic candidate would do enough to ensure American sovereignty and American rights in the international scene. They both strike me now as being too willing to say anything to get elected as the Democratic race comes down to the wire.
As for John McCain, I detest his stance on abortion, I do not like his willingness to grovel to the right wing of his party, and I think he would be far better served at this point, when he has the GOP nomination all but sewed up, to start reaching out to Democrats and independents, as he has done in the Senate so effectively in the past, instead of still trying to win the wing of the GOP that has been losing the primaries. It's plain as the nose on my face that even most Republicans are sick of the far right dominance of American politics and are screaming for a break from Dittoheads dictating policy. That having been said, I think his past record speaks for itself as being that of a practical leader who can get things done that are in the best interests of the most people.
So, this is a qualified endorsement: John McCain for President of the United States. It comes coupled with a recommendation which I have long had in mind, and which others are suggesting as well: Nominate Condoleezza Rice for Vice President. She is a good, moderate conservative who has shown both a willingness and an ability to tackle very thorny problems in the world in her capacity as Secretary of State, doing so with what I believe is an honorable record. I believe this combination would appeal to both independents and the moderate voters in both parties, as well as to black people and women who may be seeking alternatives to Obama and Clinton that are more credible than ultra conservatives like Alan Keyes and Mitt Romney.
So those are my final endorsements: John McCain for President, and Condoleezza Rice for Vice President.
